Top Universities in the World: UK, France, and Switzerland Dominate Rankings

The 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been released, with the UK’s University of Cambridge and Oxford securing fourth and sixth spots, respectively, among the top ten universities worldwide. France’s Paris-Saclay University climbed three places to secure the 12th spot, while Switzerland’s ETH Zurich ranked 21st.

The UK dominated the European rankings, with eight universities in the top 100, followed by Switzerland, Germany, and France. Germany saw three universities break into the top 50 for the first time: the University of Munich (43rd), the Technical University of Munich (47th), and Heidelberg University (50th). France also showed improvement, with three universities in the top 50: Paris-Saclay University (12th), PSL University (33rd), and Sorbonne University (41st).

These countries are also top destinations for international students, with the UK surpassing 600,000 international students, Germany hosting over 458,000 and France welcoming 412,000 international students in the 2022-23 academic year. France saw a 3% increase in international student enrollment in one year and a 17% increase over five years.

Globally, the US led with 38 universities in the top 100, while China had 14 universities on the list. Harvard University secured first place for the 22nd year in a row, followed closely by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
