There has been a tremendous increase in the number of Indian students in Australia. If a comparison is made between the years 2011 and 2019, the number of students has skyrocketed in 2019 from 5,000 to over 40,000.
Indian nationals submitted about 64,000 student visa applications to study in Australia between July 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. As per the Australian Department of Home Affairs, 75% of student visa applications are for higher studies abroad and were processed in 22 days.
Concerning international student retention, the Australian government has come up with policies to provide opportunities to meet the skill shortage.
How much will it cost?
The tuition fees and living costs are based on various factors, including field of study, level, location, lifestyle, study mode, and specific institute to study abroad. There are many other factors on which the budget to study abroad might differ. Apart from these, students need to look into transportation costs, location preferences, universities to study abroad, and much more. One can expect the weekly cost to be between $450 and $500 while in Sydney or Melbourne.
How can part-time jobs be beneficial?
Part-time jobs are ways to add extra to their earnings, which can make the student’s stay in the country more comfortable. However, it’s not only about money. But the kind of exposure students get while working as a part-time employee is immense. The students eventually become workplace-ready while choosing higher education abroad. Students should look out for the best universities to study abroad, which can also help them gain relevant exposure.
New policies by the government:
The Australian government has come up with some measures to relax work policies, which allow students to pursue work after graduation. For a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree, the post-work visa is four years (earlier it was two years).
While for a student in a master’s programme, it is five years (earlier it was three years). Not only this, Ph.D. students are allowed to stay in the country for six years; earlier, they were allowed to stay for four years. These modifications allow international students to apply for Australian Permanent Residency, thereby enhancing their long-term prospects in the nation.
Popular part-time job options for Indian students:
Part-time work in the hospitality and food service industries, such as kitchen employees, and food delivery agents, is common among them. Even the retail sector is a popular option, with positions such as sales associates, customer service representatives, and cashiers.
