Germany has introduced a series of updates for 2024 and 2025, impacting current and prospective international students studying in the country. According to a report, the largest portal for international students seeking information about education in Germany, these changes include increased requirements for blocked accounts, expanded work hours and a minimum wage hike.
One of the most significant changes is the increase in the amount required in blocked accounts for a student visa. As of September 1, 2024, international students must demonstrate they have €11,208 per year or €934 monthly to cover living expenses. This change aims to ensure students can support themselves during their studies.
Another crucial update is the permission to work more hours while studying. International students in Germany can now work up to 20 hours per week, a significant increase from the previous 10 hours per week. Prospective students can also work part-time for up to 20 hours per week while seeking university enrollment.
Germany’s minimum wage has also been raised from €12.00 to €12.41 per hour, effective January 1, 2024. This change benefits international students working part-time jobs, with a planned increase to €12.82 per hour on January 1, 2025.

- Applicants receiving financial aid under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) will see increased financial support rates with a 5% increase.
